How Porn Affects The Body / Brain

Porn is a supernormal stimulus, a modern-day pixelated drug

Remember the first time you looked at porn? The rush of adrenaline, a shaking feeling, a sense of trepidation perhaps, followed by intense sexual arousal. That first experience of porn is a clear sign that porn taps into something quite profound, there’s nothing quite like it. Porn is a supernormal stimulus, a modern-day pixelated drug and smartphones are the syringes. Here are a few ways porn affects the body and brain:

Erectile Dysfunction
Impotence rates have more than doubled in the last 25 years and it’s not entirely clear why but one strong theory is that increasing porn use has played a significant role. Many of our members have experienced impaired sexual performance: erectile dysfunction (ED), delayed ejaculation (DE), premature ejaculation (PE), low libido and anorgasmia. We are only just starting to understand the effects of porn on sexual health but for many men quitting porn leads to seriously positive results.

Depression / Anxiety / Lack of focus
There is evidence to suggest that using porn stimulates the dopamine centres of our brain in such an intense way that it has a serious impact on dopamine regulation, which in turn can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. Similar to drug use, porn can induce a high and then a crashing low. In addition to the neurochemical effects, there is something inherently depressing about having ‘sex with a screen’ and many men share in a sense of shame after ejaculating to porn. As one member aptly told us, “Porn is just not very cool.”

Sleep Deprivation
Persistent sleep deprivation from late-night porn sessions is a common issue, which often leads to feeling less alert and ‘foggy’ the next day, and can also contribute to poor mental and physical health. Porn sites deliver endless variety and stimulation, which means that stopping to get a good night’s sleep isn’t always easy. Staring at a smartphone screen doesn’t help either. The blue light from a phone’s display disrupts your circadian rhythm and your endocrine systems, which will mess up your sleeping patterns.

Lower Testosterone Levels
Similar to dopamine regulation, porn use may have a significant impact on testosterone levels. Testosterone is involved in an incredible array of processes, ranging from the development of a deep voice to getting an erection. In 2003, a Chinese study discovered that after a week of abstinence from masturbation and ejaculation, testosterone levels reached an impressive peak of 145.7%. Another study in the same year found significantly increased T levels after three weeks of abstinence.

Over the past few decades, porn has become part of mainstream culture giving people a sense that it’s entirely harmless, but former adult performers and our members tell a different story. As we learn more about porn’s effects on individuals and society, it’s becoming clear that certain habits come at a severe cost.
